Bingley is lucky to be home to a number of keen and well informed local historians. Their support for the Bingley Heritage Trail has been invaluable and their work in uncovering the often hidden past of our district goes on.
Introducing…
Alan Cattell is a local Bingley historian who has to date written five books on the history of Bingley and surrounding areas. He is actively involved in researching and writing both books and articles which all have a theme of Living History, as he involves living relatives of characters from the past and captures the evolving changes in Bingley and surrounds, buildings and infrastructure.
He is a committed supporter of the Bingley Heritage Trail, being a regular user and walker of all the locations with friends and family.
Allan Mirfield, initially a teacher at Eldwick Primary School, developed an interest in local history. Subsequently he published three volumes on the history of Eldwick. More recently, Allan has independently penned and published a book on the foundation of the Prince of Wales Park. That is titled ‘ The People’s Pride of Place’ since it was wholly constructed by the people of Bingley between 1863 and1865.
All Allan’s books are only available in local libraries and study centres.

Bingley and District Local History Society was founded in 1988 by a group of local enthusiasts whose interest in Bingley’s history had been stimulated on a local history course run by Dr Gary Firth. The society’s main aims are to disseminate Bingley’s history and provide information in the form of talks, books and DVDs which will widen the local population’s knowledge of the history of the Bingley area which was once known as ‘The Throstle’s Nest of England’. Talks and presentations are given regularly at Church House in Bingley (for details see the calendar). The Society has grown and developed over the years and now includes in it’s program an increasing number of events including some summer walks.
